Case Study 1: HR - Effective, fair and successful redundancies

Whilst we have not enjoyed the fact that redundancies have been necessary, it is a good example of how a job that is very difficult in terms of legal conformance, employee-relations and minimal business disruption, can be successfully achieved.

On five occasions Motion Media required to reduce it's fixed cost-base, and compulsory redundancies formed part of that process.

These projects were implemented in-house with legal advice as required and all projects were completed on time, with no legal action or subsequent complaint and, for the vast majority of the 76 people made redundant, the process was completed amicably.

All but one of the projects was achieved within budget. The one that overspent, was due to additional costs of specialist interpreters to assist with consultations. 

These projects have included work in:

  • collective consultation
  • pooled roles and implementation of selective criteria
  • conformance to DDA and fair treatment of all employees
  • compromise agreements
  • voluntary redundancy

Nick Sturge oversaw all of this work and implemented the majority of the detail, utilising additional in-house expertise and occasional external resource, as required.
